There are some great Festivals in the Algarve throughout the Year. Here's a taster of our favourites:
January (late) - 'Festa de Sao', held in Querenca, a smoked sausage/chourico festival.
February - 'Carnival'. The famous Rio Carnival was based on the one in nearby Loule. Towns around the Algarve celebrate with parades, markets and parties.
Easter - Sao Bras 'Festa das Tochas Floridas' — starts at 10.30 on Easter Sunday, with Mass at Igreja de Matriz. After church the locals parade along the narrow flower-carpeted streets, holding up flower torches and chanting.
June (late) - Festival Med - a World music festival, 5 stages of music, shopping, great bars, food and entertainment.
August - Olhao Seafood Festival. Great fish, live music and a party atmosphere.
August (late) - Medieval Festivals in Silves & Castro Marim. The towns are transformed back to Medieval times, locals dress in traditional clothing. Expect bands, music, markets, jousting and a great atmosphere.
August/Sept - Folklore Festivals throughout the Algarve.
September (early)- Estoi Horse Festival, a photographer's dream. Watch the locals, with pride, circling the parade ring; riders of all ages, and all manner of mounts and carriages. A truly authentic happening, well off the tourist trail.
